GOMBAK, 1 November 2018: The election for Students Representative Council (SRC) this session will now be held on 15 November following a postponement of the polling date scheduled earlier and a consensus reached with the student body recently.
Nomination will be on 9 November after the release of nomination papers that will be issued on 5 November. This time around, candidates will have three days to campaign from 12 to 14 November, compared to the 2017 election where the campaign lasted for only two days.
Deputy Rector (Students Affairs), Assoc. Prof. Dr. Zulkifli Hassan, announced the key dates for SRC election in a packed ˜Townhall: IIUM Campus Election briefing after chairing a special polling session of selecting election dates on 23 October.
The session saw two sets of dates – 5 to 16 November and 12 to 22 November – proposed by the SRC and Students Democratic Alliances (SDA) respectively. œThe votes for SRC are 449 while the votes for SDA are 71, and the spoilt votes are 5, Zulkifli announced the voting results right after the counting process completed.
Zulkifli said the new dates would be issued to the administration with the proposal prepared by the SRC.
Stating this in his announcement, he explained how IIUM students had been involved in a democratic process with good adab (virtue) and ethics.
œWe have gone through the real process of democracy with full adab and ethics, he said, adding that he hoped the dates would be welcomed by all students and parties.
Speaking to IIUMToday, the newly appointed deputy rector expressed his overall satisfaction in his engagement with the students where they were given the right to voice out their views.
œSincerely, I am really impressed with feedback and involvement of the students in our engagement with them where they have been given equal opportunity to voice out their opinion, said Zulkifli.
The polling date was previously scheduled on 25 October but has been rescheduled following response and feedback from the students.
Almost 500 students gathered at the Main Auditorium, Kulliyyah of Engineering for the session to decide on the new election dates. ***
