IMaC to change public perception on the disabled

GOMBAK, 1 November 2018: Ibn Ummi Maktum Club (IMaC) will be holding Disability Equality Training (IDET) on 7 November in IIUM campus here to facilitate participants to become agents of change in an effort to strengthen awareness among the public towards the disabled by understanding how barriers are created and how to break or prevent the creation of these barriers.

IDET’18 is a sub-programme of IIUM Disability Grand Awareness Campaign 2018 (IDGAC’18) which is a collaboration of the Students’ Representative Council (SRC) and IMaC.

The programme to be held from 8 a.m to 5 p.m in Banquet Hall, Rectory Building, will be officiated by the Deputy Rector (Students Affairs), Prof. Dr. Zulkifli Hassan.

IDET’s programme manager, Mohd Faiz Shuhaimi told IIUMToday, “We want to change public perception on the disabled people by strengthening student’s awareness and enhancing activities towards the disabled.”

“To strengthen the awareness, students need to be aware and as student leaders they can empower others as they are representatives of the students. That is why our target is to train the leaders first, ” Faiz explained.

Faiz said, “If you look at our speakers they are experienced in their field. They are also special needs people and we choose them as speakers who can deliver their own experiences.”

The first talk is on “Understanding Disability from Social Model” by Hafiz Halim, who is the Assistant Director, Disability Psychology and Counselling Division, Department of Social Welfare. Hafiz will speak on the theme “Action towards Inclusive Society”.

There will be a series of sharing sessions by prominent speakers that will be delivered on different topics related to disability awareness.

The first session is on “Disability and Impairment (Physical Disabilities)” by Principal Assistant Director, Hamidah Hassan, Policy and International Division, Department of Social Welfare.

The President of Persatuan Ibu Bapa dan Penjaga Anak Pekak (PESIBA), Sazali Shaari, will speak at the second sharing session on “Disability and Impairment (Deaf Disabilities)”.

The third session on “Disability and Impairment (Blind Disabilities”) will be given by Chairman of Human Development, Dr. Ahmad Shamsuri Bin Ahmad, who is also from Society of Blind Malaysia (SBM).

The Principal and Centre Manager of IDEAS Autism Centre (AIC), Sharifah Salleh will share her thoughts at the fourth session on “Disability and Impairment (Learning Disabilities, Autism)”.

Meanwhile, Prof. Ruzita Mohd Amin, who is the Head of Disability Services Unit (DSU), will deliver a talk on the disability awareness.

The recipients of the programme will benefit a lot in terms of knowledge and new experience with a Star point, certificate, excuse letter and refreshment.
