Education graduates should look beyond education

GOMBAK, October 5 – People always perceive the scope of an educator’s job is confined only to teaching, but there are always other options and opportunities if graduates in education are equipped with professional knowledge and skills such as entrepreneurship.

Education graduate Nor Ain said students should know their own capability before they graduate as that could serve as their backup plan in future.

Citing her own experience as a home tutor, she said that despite being a part-timer, she managed to gain around RM9,000 per month as part of her income.

“Find your own ability as a backup plan like involving yourself in entrepreneurship,” she said during a forum titled “Towards a Better Future” as one of the panelists. The other two speakers were Sabrina Che’ Harun from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) and Mohamad Solihin from Sekolah Menengah Pendidikan Khas Merbok.

Sabrina, a UKM language lecturer, who was the third speaker in panelist at the forum, said: “Educators must polish up their skills and talents while waiting for the job offer so that the opportunity will be widely open for them. It also depends on them whether they want to become a teacher or do something else.”

The former member of the Student Representative Council (SRC), Solihin said that most of the students who pursue their study in Bachelor of Education assumed that they are only able to become teachers after they graduate but did not realise that they can also become more than what they had expected.

Aimed to change the society’s perception towards the field of education, the forum was also intended to give awareness to the future educators regarding the importance of enhancing multiple skills during their study years at the university. ***
