GOMBAK, 19 April 2018: All IIUM students who are eligible voters have been advised to participate actively and vote wisely in the nation’s upcoming 14th General Election scheduled on 9 May.Â
The President of Students Representative Council (SRC), Amir Ridwan Idris, told IIUMToday that the younger generation of voters studying in the university should play a more proactive and optimistic role to decide the future of the nation.Â
He said, œThe youth should use their knowledge wisely to evaluate the policies and promises made by the political parties and candidates contesting in the general election.
œI hope youngsters will exercise their democratic rights to vote as we are an important group of people to determine the future destiny of our country.
œThis is the right time for us to participate in a decision making process in a matured way, he stressed.
Earlier, the SRC discussed with the university authority for students to be given extra holidays on 8 and 10 May to allow them to go back to their home towns to cast their votes and their request has been approved by the Rector, Prof. Dato’ Sri Dr. Zaleha Kamarudin.Â
œI really hope all IIUM students who are eligible voters will utilise this holiday to exercise their duty as voters and good citizens,” Amir said.
The extra holidays involved students in all the three IIUM campuses in Gombak, Pagoh and Kuantan.Â
The government has already declared 9 May a public holiday in the country to allow voters to cast their votes during the election. ***
