GOMBAK, 18 March 2017: PERKIM Club had recently (12 March) organised a charity baking programme called “Charity Baking 3.0” at Kulliyyah of Education Square with the objective to help the homeless.

This was a continuation of a programme ‘Charity Baking 1.0 and 2.0’ to help homeless people around Chow Kit area. Besides that, it also opened an opportunity for the students to learn baking skills and do charity work at the same time.

With the theme ‘Show the Cares, Share the Sweetness’, the club members wanted to change the perception of society about homeless people.

“Through our programme, we hope to widen your knowledge and awareness about this group and enhance your creativity in charity work,” said its assistant programme manager, Intan Sakinah.

Charity Baking 3.0 had provided two classes with two chefs, who were Dr. Radhwa Abu Bakar and Insyirah Jeffri, both from Kuliyyah Islamic Revealed Knowledge and Human Sciences. Each class was divided into two sessions, for theory, and skills application respectively.

“We learned about basic recipe today such as small cupcake and muffin especially for beginners. I hope all participants can apply their baking skills with creativity after this,” Dr. Radhwa, who has vast experience as a chef, and been long in this field, said.

“All the ingredients and ovens used were donations received from the committee and society.”

This programme received full participation from the students with a fee of RM10 charged per person and limited to 30 people only. The founder of Charity Baking was Insyirah Jeffri when she had the idea for charity work to benefit from her skill last semester. This programme was under PERKIM Entrepreneurship Bureau.

Most of the participants were satisfied with this baking class. “I really enjoyed this programme because not only I learned baking skills, but also I met new friends here,” said Nurul Zahrah, a second-year student, following the programme.

“I hope this programme can be continued with Charity Baking 4.0 and maybe they can teach more advanced recipe for making better contribution to society than before,” Fatin Nabilah from Kuliyyah of Science  made her suggestion for improvement.

PERKIM Club is an NGO body for Muslims in Malaysia. Their focus is to generate income to help these three target groups – the Orang Asli, Muallaf, and the homeless people. They are willing to receive any kind of donation such as clothing and food from members of society.
