GOMBAK, 6 March 2017: IKRAM Siswa UIAM Gombak (ISUG) has organised a project that allows the engagement between IIUM students and the society called Guide Me Project (GMP).

With the slogan, œLearners Today, Leaders Tomorrow the project is conducted once in every two weeks.

The project involving 30 volunteers participated actively in teaching the students for every session. There are approximately 84 students consisting ten kindergarten students, 40 elementary students and 34 secondary students.

The aim of this project is to uplift the societies life conditions especially the unfortunate ones. By doing this project, they want to achieve these objectives; to give the underprivileged students the chance of having education through free tuition, fulfilling youths needs of guidance, motivation and attention, thus allowing them to enjoy fun and optimistic life, to establish network of community service for sustainability sake and lastly, to enhance the spirit of volunteerism, teamwork and unity among IIUM students.

The subjects that they offer are according to the needs of the children. For the time being, they are focusing on critical subjects such as English, Mathematics, History Form 5 and Additional Mathematics Form 5.

The Programme Manager of GMP, Wan Nor Suhaila binti Wan Rusli told IIUMToday, œThere are three goals to achieve in this project which is the main goal is for helping them to pass all the subjects taught in the exams mainly UPSR, PT3 and SPM.

She also says to the volunteer who join will be able to help them to be prepared in whatever situations they are in and change their way of thinking to become great leaders whether in class or in the society.

œWe want to prove to the society, especially the underprivileged ones, that the injustice in educational system can be solved by making sure that the neglected children are able to stand on their own feet, and then elevating their familys status.

We also want to prove that not only teachers can help to elevate the educational system, but also those who want to see changes in the educational system itself, she added.

This project was actually inspired by the talk given by Dr. Mazlee during IIUM clubs expo  which highlighted the importance of giving more attention to the people around Projek Perumahan Rakyat Tempatan (PPRT) areas as some of the children there still could not afford to get proper education. ***
