Remembering “LIFE Magazine”

By Hassan Radwan

With the Internet on the rise, along with economic recessions, weve witnessed many great publications coming to an end. It has become obvious for the different kinds of magazines during 2000s until 2009 that suffered the consequences. During this time, many of these publications have been closed or even shut down completely. Despite the shut down of many of these great publications, I thought I should chronicle one of them which I have fond memories.

Lets look back and remember LIFE Magazines greatest moments.

Throughout it’s publication, LIFE Magazine was recognised as one of the greatest photojournalism magazines in the US, capturing one of the most iconic pictures since it began. One of the most iconic pictures that LIFE Magazine is known for is the famous picture of œSailor kissing a nurse that surfaced at the end of the World War II. It captured the relief and happiness that the people felt following the end of the war.

In 1963, LIFE Magazine began its publication as a weekly format, but then moved to a monthly format in the year 1978. However, with the Internet growing fast, the sales of the magazine too started to decline steadily.

Time Warner felt the need to relieve itself of its money draining properties before it merged with AOL. Originally it was known as America Online in 2001. Sadly enough, life.com was a delightful archive, offering a massive combined photo of LIFE Magazines original Getty Images that ranged from LIFEs publication to the present date, hoping to continue its photojournalism practice after the end of printed magazine.

The site was launched in April 2009, but eventually was closed by January 2012, and turned into an unorganised channel on Time.com, LIFE Magazines Corporate Parent. However, Google has maintained an outstanding archive of LIFEs past collection of pictures that were never issued during the magazine’s life time.***
