Make varsity years the best years of your life

By Azra Shuib

You have only about four years to enjoy this somewhat ‘easy’ phase of life before you venture into the real world. Thus, it’s better to make efforts to enjoy this short period of time, and make it one of the most memorable moments in life.

Read on for some tips for a better, happier and an improved quality of studying years.

Cut the drama

Brendon Burchard, author of The Charge, once quoted:  “A life filled with silly social drama and gossip indicates that a person is disconnected from purpose and lacking meaningful goals. People on a path of purpose don’t have time for drama.”

Let’s just admit the bitter truth; university life is just crazy. You pick the wrong friends, and they ruin your lives. You do something rare, and everyone becomes a ‘wise’ judge.

Most of us have seen that kind of situation where people hate each other out of silly reasons, or people leaving their friends just because they thought they have found ‘the right one’. Not to mention those who constantly quarrel in social media just because an individual has a different perspective or viewpoint. But really, if it doesn’t concern us why should we bother to get our emotions attached to silly drama? People do have different opinions and reasons to their actions. Accept that as a fact of life and just ignore things that are not worth your time. You won’t have that much time to talk about other people as you get older, so appreciate and make the best of what you have now.

Accept the fact that not everyone will like you, and learn to forgive

We spend university lives doing assignments, presentations and a number of projects. Sometimes what you have done might not be well accepted by other people, but mature up instead of holding grudges. If you are working in a team and someone tells you that he or she dislikes what you do, it’s okay – everyone has their likes and dislikes. However you can always counter it back with a valid argument. It’s better to be professional than taking everything personally.

Don’t talk behind other people’s backs. You’ll end up consuming too much of yourself. That applies to your social life as well. If you ever come across people who hate you without a sensible reason, especially nowadays with the omnipresence of social media, let it go and move on. If they can only talk bad things about you then ignore it, but with limits. If they disseminate so much hate to the point where they start to perpetuate lies, only then you should do something. But, if some people just dislike you for no reason, and you know by heart that you are a good person, forgive them and smile. The earth you are walking on is not yours. You can’t expect everyone to like you. Some will just hate you for no reason. But you live for a purpose. If they can’t affect your future, you are doing fine.

Get yourself busy with loving people who love you for who you are. Appreciate your friends who have been there with you through your ups and downs. They are the ones who are more worthy of your time.

You don’t need a lot of free time

What better platform can there be to add value to yourself than the university? You can’t expect to go far with just one particular skill; that is just very rare. You need critical thinking skills, analytical skills and social skills, among others. Find a time to engage yourself in social activities to benefit the society. That’s one thing you can do to show gratitude of being able to enrol yourself in university.

Other than that, why not join any workshop to attain more knowledge. Be it money-making skills, IT skills or even a beauty workshop, just grab the chances. You won’t be able to join many great workshops or talks out there with affordable prices like that in the university. You never know what the future has prepared for you in this world of chanciness. It’s important to be educated but what you learn might not be your career in the future. Sometimes in the process of learning other things you will find another passion, and maybe that is the one you have been dreaming of working on.

Stay healthy

When you board a plane and the flight attendants give explanations on safety guidelines, they will tell you to put on your oxygen masks first before attending others in emergency cases. That’s understandable because how are you going to help people if you are not energized?

Make it a habit to sleep and wake up early. Pray on time, eat healthy food and exercise regularly. Some might find that university life is just so hard on them. But make it a point to take care of yourself. The society puts high hopes on university graduates to work on the betterment of other people’s lives. We owe the people, so don’t let their hopes down.

These are just a few tips that you can use. Different people have different ways to be happy. As long as your choices are in line with our ethical and religious frameworks, then go ahead and celebrate your life. Life is short, so make it sweet.***
