GOMBAK, 23 March 2016: IIUM will be opening its door to more international students in the years to come, said the President of IIUM, Tan Sri Dr. Rais Yatim, during the IIUM Quality Day 2016 held recently at the Cultural Activity Centre (CAC).

“We will definitely accept more international students in the future so it is paralleled to the aims and the name of the university,” Tan Sri Rais said during question and answer session with the media. He also added that by having many international students from a variety of Islamic countries  it can help strengthen the name of IIUM as an international university.

“For now, we have five representatives from five different Islamic countries coming here to become graduates of IIUM, and we are very proud to have them here,” Tan Sri Rais said.

The university is sponsored by eight governments from the Organisation of Islamic Conference (OIC).

The idea of IIUM was first proposed by former Prime Minister of Malaysia, Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad, during his visit to United Arab Emirates in January 1982. The name “International Islamic University Malaysia” was later established on 10 May 1982, followed by the rapid building of the campus here in 1990.***
