COMPLACENCY is inexcusable, given the 800 cases of child cancer diagnosed per year. According to a paediatric oncologist senior consultant at the University Malaya Medical Centre, this is attributable to parents lackadaisical attitude towards vaccination. The example cited is liver cancer in children from birth to the age of 18, where a less than vigilant attitude and the anti-vaccine campaign has meant that parents often neglect to vaccinate their children for Hepatitis B, often skipping the critical third shot at age 5. Although parents are provided with tips on how to recognise the early symptoms of cancer in children, they are urged to œreligiously observe the prescribed vaccinations because it is the frontline of preventive medicine.
