THE œGarmin MP Step Challenge kicked off yesterday and will last until Oct 2. The three-week programme will track the lifestyle of participating members of parliament. Of our 222 MPs, only 42 have agreed to join in what is a health challenge that will see their daily activities monitored, their every calorie intake and use recorded, and their walking distance measured. Organised jointly by AECO Technologies and the Youth and Sports Ministry, it is intended to be an exercise in exemplary leadership. Divided into two categories ” Team Olympics consisting of 45-year-olds and below, while Team Universe comprises those aged 45 and above ” the winners will each receive RM10,000. The event is part of the inaugural National Sports Day to be held on Oct 10. It is non-partisan and Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin hopes that those participating will close the political gap and lead their constituents towards a healthy lifestyle by example. As the minister emphasises, the objective of National Sports Day is to create a sporting nation, which he believes Malaysia is not.
