DISEASES are bad, even when they occur occasionally and are under control. When they threaten to cause an epidemic, then the community must be on heightened alert. An invisible cordon must be built around its locale to prevent these diseases from causing havoc. In the current instance where the Health Ministry has said that the country is on the brink of a dengue epidemic, everyone must take responsibility to prevent it from happening, for the simple reason that it is a vector-borne disease, the culprit being the Aedes mosquito, which breeds in unsavoury environments. And we all know that the Aedes mosquito only needs a spoonful of water to breed. Therefore, cleaning ones surroundings to prevent these mosquitoes from breeding is an obvious approach because it is said that damage control through fumigation and spraying bodies of stagnant water with chemicals is not immediately effective due to the creatures life cycle. And, apparently, its larva is resistant to drought; just lying in wait for the rains, to begin another cycle of terror.
