Decoding the dress code

CONSERVATISM within the social context is, like its political equivalent, a personal choice. One chooses to be or not to be conservative in the way one thinks, one acts and, too, the way one dresses. Democratic freedoms remain the applicable norms and, therefore, respecting the choices of the ˜other operates. A conservative respects the progressive/modern/liberal and vice-versa. Imposition of normative values is acceptable only within very narrow limits. This being the basis of social conduct, should then dress codes be imposed on all, especially women, as happened in the Road Transport Department (RTD) recently where a woman dressed decently was asked to don a sarong because some Neanderthal in a Rela uniform took exception to the length of her skirt?
