Poetry way to educate our souls

GOMBAK, 20 May 2015: Kelab Mahasiswa TFTN (Teach For The Needs) conducted a poetry night at the Edu Square recently for ‘poetry lovers’ and those who love arts and culture.

Like candlelight dinner, the Edu Square was candlelit that night. The programme began with the reading of A. Samad Said’s poem entitled Hidup Bersama by Usamah Muein, an architecture student. This was followed by the other poems like Peludah Bangsa by ‘Aku Bangsa Malaysia’ team and Aku Anak Bangsa by Abid Zain, a student from Kulliyyah of Economics and Management Science.

There were also a special performance by one of the representatives of All Women’s Action Society (AWAM) who gave her soulful poem reading entitled ‘A Good Woman’. There was also Fazleena and ‘The Lasykar’ performing poetry song like ‘Aman’, ‘Sederhana’, and ‘Wajah-Wajah’ accompanied by their contemporary music performance that was really fun.

Asking more about ‘Teach For The Needs’, one of the volunteers of TFTN who managed this programme, Hayati Abdul Halim, said they believed that the best form of learning come from the conscience of the teacher. Therefore, their fight for education system, using various ways to interpret education through poetry, theatre, music and many other ways.

“Education is not only what we learn in class. Poetry is one of the ways to educate people’s soul as well as the society,” she added.

She also promotes the ‘Teach For The Needs’ which gives an opportunity for the less fortunate students who do not have the financial ability to attend extra tuition classes.

She said, “Our target are orphans, with family income not exceeding RM800 per month and have shown eagerness to succeed. This is a new establishment in IIUM since not many know about our society and programme.” ***
