TEACHERS are amazing. They fill in for parents when the children are at school; for the most part, more than parents they assist in the blossoming and flowering of a childs intellect; and, together with parents, they mould the child into upright citizens. While they may sometimes lament the size of their classes they, nevertheless, attend to their responsibilities with commitment, willing every child under their care to excel. For, in the performance of every child is writ large a teachers professional attributes. Some of their charges may fail them but those who succeed will bear witness to their ability. Therefore, scapegoating teachers for Malaysias inability to be highly ranked in the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Developments (OECD) global school ranking is an injustice. Rather there is a need to assess where the weaknesses are. That the school system remains orderly even in remote areas is testimony to a teachers dedication, the few bad apples notwithstanding.
