THE Mat Rempit menace is said to have started as early as in the 1970s, where youths would group and challenge one another to a race or just form a convoy to travel to recreational areas in the evenings. In the process, they would burn tyres while other road users were forced to move aside or risk getting into an accident. Fast forward to the 1980s, and the Mat Rempit have gone one step ahead by modifying their motorcycles and challenging their opponents to a race on busy roads in major towns. It was either for adrenaline rush, a pack of cigarettes or girls, dubbed the œcheerleaders, but the menace remained the same, disturbing other road users and waking up sleeping residents in neighbourhoods. One will expect them to stop as they reach a certain age, or quit when they get married and start a family.
