POVERTY is a burden and makes nations vulnerable to the slightest adverse shift in circumstances. An earthquake registering a 7.8 tremor on the Richter scale is well beyond slight. When part of Earth opens up, as it did last week in Nepal, the capital, Kathmandu, reportedly moved. Unfortunately, despite its fame sitting as it does on the Himalayas and is the access point to mountain peaks such as the Everest, this country that plays host to foreign visitors most of the year for as long as it remains accessible, is one of the worlds poorest. That it was ill-prepared to deal with the long predicted arrival of a massive quake then goes without saying. And, as is usual in these conditions, the children are the obvious victims.
