Money is not everything

By Madeehah Nazneen Bt Md Najib

It is no doubt there are times we are to ˜obey how powerful the money is. Those who are with money, wealth and power, they are the most successful and respectable. This kind of perception is not something foreign to us as we believe money can influence everything.

If we look at the meaning of money in general, according to Wikipedia, “Wang refers to an object or money or goods to the general public and legal under the law as a medium of exchange in business transactions and other transactions. Wang also serves as a store of value, unit of account, and the standard value debt”. Undoubtedly, with the money we can afford to buy and have everything.

However, the fact is that not all precious substance can be purchased with ˜specific currency. For example, firstly is adab. Adab is also known as good manners in English which can be defined generally as behaviour, courtesy and politeness in someone. Through manners also, there is a benchmark in determining to what extent is an individual’s personality. Manners are born and shaped naturally in a person and not something that can be bought. Manners are one of the highest values in a person.

Secondly is respect. Respect generally means when we know how to appreciate everyone around us equally without double standards. In my own opinion, every person deserves to be respected naturally without recognising the status or even because of the differences. There is one English proverb that says “respect is earned.” Thus, in order to get the respect from others, we must learn to respect others first. The saying “a person who is nice to you but rude to the waiter, is not really a nice person” inspires me enough.

And lastly, it is integrity. Basically integrity is the nature of identity that includes sincerity, openness, transparency, honesty, truth, and firmness to the principles, not easily influenced, reliable and most importantly integrity rejects all decisions that cater only for personal gain or interest. We all really need to practise the value of integrity in ourselves. This is because each of us has a responsibility to hold no matter in what field we are in.

Thus, it is clear that money will never be able to buy these three most powerful elements, which are worth far more than money. We need to realise that we have to stop money from controlling and blurring our hearts to see the truth. Indeed, money does not necessarily bring happiness because happiness is not necessarily in material forms. But, if there is wisdom in using money, there should not be any problem.***
