Nepal earthquake: Let’s pray for those suffering

By Zhe Peng

On 25 April, Nepal experienced a severe natural disaster struck by an earthquake on the scale of 8.1-magnitude. An earlier report by British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) indicated that  the number of deaths were just a few hundreds, which made us feel in the way that things were not as bad as we would have expected. Unfortunately, that number was consistently rising, and the death toll increased to more than 3726, as later reported by CNN on 27 April. It is definitely one of the most serious tragedies in human history.

From Islamic perspective, the first thing that we need to do is that we should think of our Creator, and see how powerful He is, and how weak the human beings are. And then, we need to confess, is there anything wrong that we have done which makes Allah giving a sign to remind us? Human beings are usually selfish in the sense that they never care about others. However, only when we go through this kind of hard time, the solidarity between the human beings would be shown.

The rescue team from different countries were immediately despatched to the devastated country. For example, the Chinese government has sent a rescue team consisting of around 100 well-trained rescue persons. It makes us ponder that if we could help each other in the way we did in this disaster, then, how wonderful the world would be. Therefore, there is always something that we could learn from this kind of disaster.

As Allah has mentioned in the holy Quran: what seems to be bad for you, to Allah, it is good for you, what seems to be good for you, to Allah, it is bad for you. And let all of us pray for a quick recovery of Nepal from the earthquake, and let’s hope the number of death tolls won’t increase any more.
