MASUM 2015: IIUM’s hockey team wins 2nd place

GOMBAK, 14 April 2015: Universiti Pertahanan Nasional Malaysia (UPNM) beat IIUM’s hockey team 2 – 1 in the final match of Majlis Sukan Universiti Malaysia (MASUM) 2015, held at Stadium Hoki USM, Penang from 4 to 12 April last week. IIUM stepped into the semi-final after being the runner-up in group A behind UPNM.

IIUM hockey team were qualified for the finals after a tie at the final score (1 – 1) during semi-finals and defeated UKM through penalty stroke (4 – 2).

However, a slight lost with UPNM at the final match did not bring any disappointment to the team since the captain, Anuar Syafir, has proudly scored at the 50th minute after receiving a pass from his teammate, Noraiman Azman.

“It was a tough and a great match against UPNM, we enjoyed the whole game even though we lost at the final match,” Safwan Omar expressed his enjoyment throughout the whole game. He said, “We will prepare ourselves to meet and beat them in future.”

A total of 18 members represented IIUM team along with the coach, Mat Zahani, who had encamped in USM Penang for a week during the match. IIUM team which won second place received RM1,500 with silver medal and captain Anuar Syafir has been awarded most valuable player for MASUM hockey category.***
