Hundreds within campus celebrated International Women’s Day

GOMBAK, 11 March 2015: Hundreds of people, female as well as male, within the IIUM community gathered to celebrate women empowerment in conjunction with the International Womens Day at Main Auditorium last night.

The successful event was organised by Assalam Club in collaboration with IIUM Model United Nations Club, Political Science Students Association (POSSA) and Students Representative Council (SRC).

According to Assistant Programme Manager, Sukainah Abdulqader, Assalam Club initiated the celebration of International Womens Day last year and has decided to make it a tradition in this university.

Nani Abdul Rahman, a graduate of IIUM and Harvard, Ameera Natasha Moore, current IIUM student (Cambridge Debate Best Speaker) and Sarah Chinoy, former IIUM debater, shared their thoughts and feelings on various women-related topics including women empowerment, gender equality, religion and marriage.

A pre-recorded video by the United Nations Youth Advocate USA, Rana Abdelhamid was played specially for last nights audience. Rana spoke about her foundation entitled Womens Initiative for Self-Empowerment (WISE) and the struggles of Muslim women living in the west.

The audience was entertained by intriguing yet insightful play depicting the brave life of Khawlah bin Azwar as well as spoken words by Yasmin and Mohammed Sano.***
