IN a week laden with government pronouncements, there is only one that can be said to have truly come as a surprise: eight major roads in Kuala Lumpur were to have their names changed. With the Kuala Lumpur City Hall statement coming just two days before the change took effect, it is understandable that many Kuala Lumpur residents felt blindsided by their local government. In fact, this strategy was a repeat of what had happened this time last year, when City Hall announced new property valuation rates (and, by extension, new assessment rates). Now, as then, the decision by City Hall has been met by surprise and shock. But rather than listening to the peoples opinions, there appears to be attempts to silence the objections.
