If we were to define patriotism, we can easily relate it to a sense of belonging and pride to the country where we were born and a willingness to defend it at whatever cost. The Free Dictionary defines it as “love or devotion to one’s country.” In another word, it’s national pride.
However, nowadays, it is often said that today’s generation of youths does not have a strong sense of patriotism like their parents used to be back then when they were at their age.
The love for the country does not develop on its own. With the help of instruction and demonstration by the superiors (parents, friends, educators, leaders, etc) we can instil this pride in today’s youths. Below are some of the tips (among many) I have gathered for you to learn the values of patriotism…
Patriotic songs and National Anthem
National Anthem or ‘Negaraku’ must be respected. Teach yourself to stand up properly to show respect and honour for the anthem. Such discipline would easily shape you to become a responsible citizen of your country.
Patriotic thoughts
Instil that patriotic spirit or “semangat kemerdekaan” in the youth by encouraging them to participate in discussions or dialogues available everywhere. Ask questions or do research about the heritage and history of your nation. Each opportunity can help you to develop that patriotic sentiment.
Ceremonies
There are many opportunities for youth to fuel patriotism through various patriotic events available, especially during the month of August for Malaysians. By participating, you’ll promote a love for your country. An example of ceremony would be the National Parade.
Programmes
Get involve in various programmes that promote the spirit of Merdeka. Theatre and community clean-up are some of the programmes you can get to join. This will enable you to gain an understanding of patriotism in action.
Trips & Tours
Even though it sounds boring, visiting the national monument and historical places can instil the spirit of patriotism. Tugu Negara (National Monument), Dataran Merdeka (Independence Square), or Kompleks Sejarah Pasir Salak (Pasir Salak History Complex) are some of the significant historical places where you can allow yourself to experience and learn more about the history of your nation.
