The term ‘renewable energy’ is becoming more and more popular nowadays. What is that? And more importantly, what role does it play in achieving sustainable development goals?
To simply explain, renewable energy is an energy source that can be reused and mainly comes from natural resources. Essentially, this type of energy source will never run out. Renewable energy is good for the environment. This is because, it plays an important role in preventing pollution, fighting climate change and reducing carbon gas emission through its usage.
Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) 7, Affordable and Clean Energy, aims to ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all. The usage of renewable energy such as solar power, wind power and hydropower do not release any greenhouse gasses during its operation as compared to burning fossil fuels. This way, air pollution can be avoided, creating cleaner and healthier environment for future generations.
Other than that, the growth of renewable energy sector will help achieve SDG 8, Decent Work and Economic Growth because it creates job opportunities for people. It also encourages the usage of local renewable energy sources rather than relying on fossil fuel imports. This reduction of cost will ultimately contribute towards a positive economic growth.
Next, the usage of renewable energy reduces carbon footprint which is one way to mitigate the effects of climate change. This will greatly contribute towards achieving SDG 13, Climate Action by stabilizing global temperature and in return, will reduce the severity of climate impacts. Countries that transition towards using renewable energy can enhance their resilience towards climate impacts as well.
All in all, it is encouraged to practice the usage of renewable energy before it is too late. We should realise its importance in achieving sustainable development goals to ensure a brighter and healthier future.***
