PETALING JAYA, 20 April 2024 – In a heart-warming initiative, students from the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) through IIUM SEJAHTERA Women in Sustainable Development (WiSE) had on 20 April 2024 organised a community engagement programme with Rumah Kebajikan Anak-Anak Yatim dan Ibu Tunggal Hajah Kamariah in Petaling Jaya. It is a centre supporting orphans and single mothers. This programme was aimed at fostering the spirit of volunteerism and civic mindedness among IIUM students as they are led by the slogan, “leading the way”.

Seventeen passionate students from various kulliyyahs at the IIUM were at the centre, while another half of the students participated through digital platforms.  The programme included digital interactions and activities designed for active participation with orphans and single mothers. Students engaged in meaningful conversations with orphans and single mothers, and learnt about their life experiences, challenges, hopes and aspirations.

The programme started with œDigital Didik led by IIUM Political Science lecturer, Dr. Amelia Yuliana binti Abd Wahab. The orphans and single mothers were exposed to communication through digital technology. The aim was to provide moral support and motivate them to strive to perform their best despite the difficulties and challenges. According to Dr. Amelia, œDigital Didik has been a weekly activity that the group conducted since March with asnaf and orphans in the Gombak areas, near the IIUM Campus. This time around, the students requested to have œDigital Didik as part of their community engagement programme in Petaling Jaya.

After “Digital Didik” a few games were played with the orphans during the programme. This programme was not just about visiting the centre; it was about building connections and understanding the realities of life faced by these groups,” said programme manager, Nur Hazwani binti Jalil. “I hope that this kind of programme could be organised more frequently to create positive change and promote inclusivity and compassion within the community,” she also mentioned. The collaboration showcased the power of community engagement and collective support.

The founder of the centre, Hajah Kamariah bin Lassim, was delighted with the kind gestures by the IIUM delegates and looked forward to having more engagements with them.
