GOMBAK, 9 January 2023: In efforts to spread awareness and encourage IIUM students to recycle used fabrics, IIUM Eco Club organised the IIUM Jom Fabrik programme where recycle bins were placed in certain locations of IIUM.
In collaboration with the Institute Onn Jaafar (IOJ) and Kloth Cares, the programme was officially launched on Friday (6 January) by the Rector of IIUM, Prof. Emeritus Tan Sri Dzulkifli Abd Razak.
According to the Co-Founder of Kloth Cares, Nik Suzila Nik Hassan, more than one hundred billion pieces of garments are being created every year, and more than seventy per cent ended up in landfills which disrupted the environment.
“As cloth like shirts can be recycled, if it is recycled, it can turn into a new material. Which is why one of the easiest solutions for us is to recycle,” she emphasised.
She also mentioned that the fabric bins are not accessible enough for people to recycle, which explained the lack of people recycling fabrics.
Thus, she expressed her gratitude for IIUM adopting three fabric bins as this will encourage students to recycle.
As there are currently three bins being distributed at IIUM, Nik Suzila suggested that the recycle bins should be transported in every mahallah and kulliyyah of IIUM so that it will create habits for the students to recycle.
For the people in IIUM who wanted to dispose of unused fabrics, the fabric bin can be found at gate 2, the parking lot beside Mahallah Aminah, and between Mahallah Siddiq and Mahallah Bilal Cafe.
Kloth Cares Fabric Recycling Movement works to inspire Malaysians to take responsibility for preventing unwanted fabrics from ending up in landfills.
Meanwhile, IOJ is a non-profit organization committed to providing temporary relief to the underprivileged by enlisting volunteers from public and private institutions.***
