Israel Peace Deal: Does it mean Muslims being “spiralled into silence”?

By Nurul Izzati binti Zakariah

On 11 December, another Arab country, Morocco has officially showed their support towards Israel by establishing diplomatic relations with the country with the help of President Donald Trump as a mediator.

Within only a month left to hold the presidency, Trump who is also a hardcore supporter of Israeli, was too determined to claim that this agreement is a great success in West Asia.

The action taken by Morocco tremendously demonstrated a betrayal of the Muslims, Jerusalem, Al-Aqsa and the Palestinian people.

Over the past few years, the issue of oppression towards the Palestinian people has become the main concern among Muslims. A situation where the Israeli government continues to discriminate and enforce severe restrictions towards them.

The conflict has reached its alarming alert when the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has agreed to normalise relations with Israel in August this year. This action has paved the way for other Arab nations to do the same.

Things become more pathetic and disappointing when nations that are supposed to be the defenders of the faith offer nothing to protest.

A nation that is assumed to show its outrage and enrage did not respond but remained silence. In fact, a country that is believed to have the power in making changes even let it down.

Egypt? Bahrain? Sudan? Jordan? These countries have successfully followed the UAE in recognising Israel.

According to the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) experts, this new peace agreement between both sides enables liaison in business relations, tourism, direct flights, scientific cooperation and full diplomatic relations at the ambassadorial level.

Thus, what will happen to our Muslims in Palestine if these things happen? Are we aware of that? Or do we remain in silence?

Through this humble piece of writing, it is good for us to contemplate a situation where one party which declares a close relationship with another party will often try to avoid any misconception and misunderstanding.

Does this case similar to the above issues? Yes, it is partially similar, perhaps, absolutely similar.

We are afraid that this deal will legitimise the never-ending oppression made by Israeli to our brothers there.

We are worried that this normalisation of relations will destroy the hopes and struggles of the Palestinian people to liberate their land.

Simultaneously, we need to realise that the Israeli would never stamp out their occupation in Palestine and let the region towards a just peace.

But, where are we today? Am I wrong to say that the Palestine issue has become immune among Muslims?

My naive point of view agrees that we are immersed in the current modernisation. Drowned in a world that promises nothing. Until we believe that the issue of other Muslim countries deemed to be a deviant issue to be raised.

Because, in our everyday life, all the things that we gathered are about entertainment. Since we are living in an ‘echo-chambers’ where beliefs and worldly interest are set to be reflected and repeated.

Until we are afraid to challenge the majority’s opinion and scared of making changes. Often feeling backward when expressing the plight of our brothers.

In the end, we are spiralled into silence. Remain standstill during the time where we are disallowed to go there.

The least that we can do is by making du’a for them. With hope, may our prayers be the proof that we are not among the billions who remain silent.

May Allah accept our daily prayers for them. Palestine will be freed. ***
