Ever think how best you can serve your parents?

By Fatin Najiha

Parents are someones closest to our heart after Allah and the Prophet. We must be the best at something by doing the best to our parents. We must show our potential to be good – at same time merciful, kind, charitable and showing respect. It means, having all the good characteristics towards your parents as they deserve to be treated that way.

We must realise that a father is not just a father, he is the one who has contributed to our upbringing and he is also the one who has provided us with care, protection and daily needs. The mother has also given a big contribution when she carried us for almost nine months, then delivered us in pain, fed us and stayed up through the night to attend to us when we were sick. That’s why their kindness can never be outweighed by anything and we must appreciate every single thing that they do to bring us up.

Young people easily become hot tempered because they think that they had figured out the world. We feel we are at the top of the world. It is one of the reasons we put aside parents’ advice. Allah’s command is that we must respond with the greatest words in the greatest manner. Show the best attitude towards our parents no matter what parents do to us, have parent’s mercy. We should not even show our frustrations towards our parents whether they are yelling at us, saying things that are fair or not fair to us.

When parents are ageing they become harder to be handled. They are going to be mad when they don’t know the reason they have reached this old age. It is particularly challenging to take care of our parents when they are at this stage. As human beings, we can never pay back what our parents have done to us by raising us, taking care of us, and protecting us. In the Quran verse 17:23,

“And your Lord has decreed that you worship none but Him.  And that you will be dutiful to your parents.  If one of them or both of them attain old age in your life, say not to them a word of disrespect, nor shout at them but address them in terms of honour.”

We must be the best and give the best for our parents because we can never repay what they have done to us, only Allah does.***
