GOMBAK, 18 August 2017: The 17th Architectural Heritage Studies Exhibition (JEJAK) held at KAED Gallery from 7 until 11 August recently had given students a unique lesson and experience for them to know more about the Javanese and Kerinchi cultures and their architecture.
Organised by the students of Kulliyyah of Architecture and Environmental Design (KAED) on the theme “Journal of Exploration on Javanese and Kerinchi Masjid Architechture”, the exhibition was aimed at educating people on the need to treasure traditional buildings, and to show-case heritage and their contributions to Islam in terms of architecture, construction and resistance to the surrounding influence, and to reflect on the historical heritage of ancient times.
The theme was considered based on factors of both cultures then which were closely associated with the Malay culture. The typology chosen was determined by the research carried out according to the curricular requirement which is related to contribution of or in relation to Islam.
Event’s programme manager, Mohd Emran Talib said, “This event involved more than 2,000 guests including parents, friends from other universities, local people from chosen mosques, architects, lecturers from other Kulliyyah, and travellers (from New Zealand).”
“At least by now, they have a better knowledge about mosques construction, how old they are, and most important is the appreciation in itself. I can say that this event is a real success.”
This exhibition concentrated on three different mosques which were Masjid Pondok Tinggi, Masjid Kiramah, and Masjid Istiqomah Sungai Tiang Darat. Two of the mosques were located in Indonesia, while Masjid Istiqamah was located in Perak.
“Every mosque has its own uniqueness and exceptional elements. Not to compare, different mosque applied different ways of construction based on the surrounding typology, yet what made them special is their age to resist until today.”
The outcome of the event was significant for KAED students who were involved as they had set out the data collection since January last year. It took them two months to prepare for the exhibition, to do promotion, and to handle the invitation.
Emran said, “I am fully satisfied with this event. I would say it is a wrap-up of all the good work and presentations done by all my team and committee members.”
According to Emran, the committee received compliments from many guests, among them were the following: Deputy Rector (Student Affairs), Prof. Dato’ Dr. Mizan Hitam; Dean of KAED, Prof. Dr. Abdul Razak Sapian; Deputy Dean (Academic Affairs and Course Coordinator), Asst. Prof. Dr. Zuraini Denan; Ketua Pembina Yayasan Pendidikan Bung Hatta, Drs. H. Zuiyen Raiz; Rector of UBH, Prof. Dr. Azwar Ananda; Dr. Nengah Tela of Dewan Fakultas FTSP, and Haji Mad Sahid bin Hj Mohd Safuan, the Penghulu of Kampung Sungai Tiang Darat. ***
