GOMBAK, 13 April 2017 – Â The International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) Arabic debate team already made the IIUM community proud although they did not manage to clinch the title of champion in the International University Arabic Debating Championship (IUADC) 2017 held in Qatar last night.
In the grand final, with the motion, “This House believes that moderate Muslims carry a special obligation to apologise for and criticise violent acts carried out in the name of Islam”, IIUM as the government side faced the opposition team from Qatar University.
IIUM was represented by four students from the Kulliyyah of Islamic Revealed Knowledge and Human Sciences (KIRKHS) – Muhammad Nurfirman Mohamed 22, Ikmal Hakimi, 23 , Nazri Rostam, Â 22 and ˜Abd Rahim Ellias, 21.
Nurfirman Mohamed secured third place in the best speaker category.
Meanwhile, the IIUM community who watched the live streaming of the debate praised the IIUM team for their having successfully made it to the final which was regarded as a real outstanding achievement.
One of the students, Rabiatul Norjan said in her comment: “Alhamdulillah, congratulations to IIUM, now they are standing tall together with the Arabs.”
The IUADC 2017 was held from 8 until 12 April, participated by 88 teams from 46 countries.
For the first time, IIUM became the first non-native Arab university who made it to final in the international Arabic debate championship which many felt that IIUM is the home of debaters.***
