GOMBAK, 7 April 2017: The commencement of the second IIUM Student Leaders Assembly (ISLA) at the universitys Senate Hall last Sunday (2 April) was in full force as 10 motions of great significance were discussed and approved.
ISLA saw 24 representatives from the Students’ Representative Council (SRC) expressing their opinions and views for the betterment of their respective department and Kulliyyah.
A total of 151 members were in attendance with many comprising of student leaders representing each and every student club and society in IIUM.
The assembly opened with an enlightening speech by the President of LAWSOC and speaker for ISLA, Helmey Haris. He shared about the reputable status ISLA has as an institution for IIUM students and what it means to our university as a whole.
œI am proud to say that IIUM is the forth university in the country to have a student parliament, and ISLA is the first of its kind to be conducted fully in English, Helmey said.
The assembly was followed by a few words of wisdom from the President of SRC, Amirul Hisham, who spoke about the need to further strengthen ISLA for the sake of improving student rights.
With enthusiasm he said, œDespite the success that we have achieved in creating ISLA, we still need to be aware of the loopholes that persist within it.
From there, the voting session for each motion took stage. A total of 10 motions were brought forth for the members to vote. Based on the results of the votes, decisions were made as to the position that will be established in approaching the situations described for each respective motion.
