U.N wonder woman campaign for gender equality

The United Nations (U.N) has discontinued its campaign promoting Wonder Woman as an ambassador for equality, it was announced on 14 December recently.

This is quite a sad news that the U.N has swiftly acquiesced to an online petition. Many at the United Nations, however, were uncomfortable with the promotion of a cleavage-baring woman of uncommon physical proportions in thigh-high boots as a positive image for women and girls., according to Reuter’s report.

The online petition to fire œWonder woman has reached almost 45,000 supporters on 12 December, with a slightly support in the world. Reuters reported that œheavy criticism which I cannot agree. “We and the society indeed a model which shows the beautiful inner and empowerment, but we cannot just let it down by the reason of the image of her being too ˜sexual and œimpossible.  It is not enough to convince people.”

A spokeswoman for DC Entertainment, Courtney Simmons, said on Monday (13 December) that the company was “extremely pleased with the awareness” that the partnership brought efforts to promote the rights and achievements of women and girls. Plans to release a Wonder Woman comic book next spring dedicated to the empowerment of women and girls remained on course, she said.

“Wonder Woman stands for peace, justice and equality, and for 75 years she has been a motivating force for many and will continue to be long after the conclusion of her U.N. honorary ambassadorship,” Simmons said.

A UN spokesman confirmed to Reuters that the empowerment campaign will end this Friday (23 December) although he did not provide a reason for the decision. Spokesman Jeffrey Brez told the news agency that previous U.N initiatives with fictional characters have had short runs. The Wonder Woman campaign was initially expected to continue through 2017.

“It is alarming that the United Nations would consider using a character with an overtly sexualised image at a time when the headline news in the United States and the world is the objectification of women and girls,” according to the petition. Wonder women has played a great, strong female role models in our social life, and it is the goal of empowerment of all the women and girls.

Until now the United Nations has not responded to the comment. ***
