GOMBAK, 15 October 2016: The IIUM Mustangs team that participated in the Kejohanan Olahraga & Renang Majlis Sukan Universiti Malaysia 2016 at Sports Complex, Sultan Azlan Shah campus, Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) in Tanjung Malim, Perak, recently, made a proud achievement when they brought back three medals; 1 silver and 2 bronze.
For the IIUM Mustangs athletics team, in the 100m, 200m and 400m event, the sprinters managed to get into the semi-finals and for the 800m event, they managed to get into the finals. In the 1500m event, one of the participants, Azim, managed to get into sixth place with the record timing of 4:56.
Siti Norseha Binti Zakaria, a student from EDU who participated in the 3000m event, got into third place, bringing home with her a bronze medal with the timing of 13:56:3.
Norseha also managed to secure fourth place in the 1500m event at 6:17:6.
In the 10000m walking event, Khalifah bin Tambong, from EDU, TESL ranked at 2nd place with a record timing of 0:59:10 and Irfan Iskandar Putera bin Khairul from KIRKHS (BENL) ranked at fifth place in 1:10.30. Both of them brought home a bronze medal. The fifth place was secured in the finals for the 4 x 400m event.
On the other hand, for the long jump event, Azman managed to secure sixth place at 6.09m and the fourth place was secured by Shaq in the triple jump event at 12.63m.
The swimming team gave their best performance as well. Firdaus, Najib, Yusuf and Akid secured fourth place in the 4x100m freestyle event. For the 50m breaststroke event, Luqman got into eighth place and Zhang Zhiyuan got into tenth place.
Moreover, the fifth place was secured by Akid in the 100m freestyle event and Yusuf in the 1500m event. Also, the sixth place was secured by Firdaus in the 50m freestyle event.
Regarding the athletes’ performance, the team was overall proud of their achievement as many of them had improved their own personal record timing and admitted that “there’s more room for improvement”.
When asked regarding the championship next year, they said they would definitely bring on a better ball game and train harder.***
