Nur Farhana: “My precious experience inspires me to serve in SRC”

By Norhaspin Ajib

Recently an election for the new Students’ Representative Council (SRC) was carried out to elect students’ representative from each kulliyyah in IIUM.

As someone who loves reading English adventure and participates in the intellectual conference, Nur Farhana Mohd Faizu has been elected a student representative for Kulliyyah of Language and Management( KLM).

Passionate in public relations, Nur Farhana, 22, has valuable experience to take with her in leading the students of the Kulliyyah. In September 2014, when she was in her second year, she received an opportunity to go on an exchange student programme to Oman with 18 other students.

Farhana mingled with the Arab society from different countries like Saudi Arabia and Yemen. She joined their society there by participating in the English Language bureau where a number of programmes in English were held.

It was a real moment of change when she represented Malaysia by participating in public speaking that saw her winning second place at the competition. At that time, Nur Farhana really felt the satisfaction of doing something for the good of her homeland.

œYes, there I was inspired to join many programmes, and due to that I have acquired leadership skills based on my experience as programme manager. Joining these programmes has enabled me to be close with other communities in the university.

So, when she got back to Malaysia later she felt rather empty because she was so used to being active and busy while studying in Oman.

Nur Farhaana was looking for a student society that fit her interest. At first she joined TV SRC and became a reporter where she had to cooperate with various bureau and to know the functions of public relations, welfare, and legal work. Overall, she needed to learn how to deal with others.

Plus with professional ability and being decisive Nur Fahana felt happy when she was able to make others happy through arranging informative programmes and getting useful feedback to improve on her performance. With such experience she now looks forward to contribute more to the society.

œIt was sparked in my mind why not I become a member of SRC. Indeed, I felt that with the knowledge and skills that I possessed I would be able to serve SRC better,” she said.

Nur Farhana explained her plans as contained in her manifesto as follows:

1. To organise a series of career talk for KLM students

A series of career talk for KLM students will be arranged to build networking, which include trips to the Ministry of Tourism, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka. Students who want to join the foreign service would have a chance to visit the Ministry of Foreign Affairs while those who love literary works can visit Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka.

2. To establish a smart partnership with IIUM industrial link for internship placement

As a new kulliyyah in IIUM, we are facing a lot of problems in adding a subject, unsystematic registration, and internship. We know that the Office of the Industrial Link will be able to help us to be a linkage with various companies that can offer places for internship for all students of KLM. We look forward for that kind of smart partnership to pave the way for linkages with the industry.

3. To propose staff directory in every kulliyyah in IIUM

It is true that staff directory is available in IIUM website, but it is not regularly updated to facilitate the students. We will provide a board with staff name, contact number, and email addresses for students to look for lecturer’s rooms.

œI joined SRC because it is a useful platform to be in direct contact with students and to contribute to their welfare, she added. ***
