‘What Malaysia means to me’

By Nabila Abu Bakar

What is Malaysia to me? I remember when I was asked to tell a story about the country that I love the most, and that’s Malaysia, during my primary school years back then.

Malaysia is where I have spent my lifetime since childhood days until now. It is my home country and the place where I was born and raised. I remember every single word while singing the Negaraku which required me to stand straight to respect the national anthem.

Malaysia reflects the spirit of solidarity, understanding, togetherness and humanity of all people in this country. Malaysia is a unique country of racial diversity comprising Malays, Chinese and Indians. The pluralistic multi-ethnic society has coloured the culture, lifestyle, and even the diet. This has attracted foreign tourists to visit Malaysia to learn for themselves more about the culture and its people.

As a result of racial diversity, there are different types of food according to the respective ethnic group. It is a privilege where the citizens of this country can look forward to the different kind of food. I remember when I travelled overseas, I missed Malaysian delicacies so much, there is nothing that can beat nasi lemak, roti canai, teh tarik and other amazing food in this country. Malaysia is everything to me since I can get what I want in this country.

Malaysia has a lot of interesting places to visit too. These places often become the focus for foreign tourists to visit our country. For example, Malaysia has a recreation area in the highlands with cool temperatures such as Cameron Highlands and Genting Highlands. At these places, visitors can enjoy the natural beauty that is unique with views of vegetables and tropical fruits plantation.

Other than the highlands, Malaysia is completely stunning with the existence of beautiful beaches and islands such as Tenggol Island, Tioman Island, Langkawi Island, Pangkor Island, Perhentian Island and others. People can travel within the country by visiting interesting places yet feel comfortable to strengthen relationship among family members and friends. Everything is possible and easily accessible.

I am proud that Malaysia is a peaceful country. There are no wars among Malaysians and we have been living harmoniously. Malaysians should therefore be thankful because we are safe here and not at war with anybody. Malaysia is also a sheltered country since it is free from some of the worst calamities or disasters like earthquakes that could bring harm to its people.

Even though I have positive thought about Malaysia, there are, of course, some Malaysians who would say that not everything about the country is rosy. Some might complain about politics, education, economy and other issues that they think are not up to their expectations. Nevertheless, no nation is without its shortcomings, and it all depends on the citizens to effect whatever changes that they want within the constitution and the law permitted.

Lets therefore strive to make Malaysia a better country for all.

Love Malaysia and I love being a Malaysian! ***
