GOMBAK, 15 May 2016: IIUM students from the Ahmad Ibrahim Kulliyyah of Law (AIKOL) have made it to semifinals for International Client Consultation Competition held at University of Windsor, Ontario recently. IIUM team, which represented Malaysia was coached by Suzanna Kamaruzzaman.

The team, consisting of Khairunnajihah Aqila Binti Mohd Sofian, Mohd Azrizal Bin Hamzi and Siti Naquiah Binti Mohd Jamel, managed to survive until semifinals before they were defeated by the New Zealands team. IIUM team has succeeded in being the only Asian country that has made it to semifinals.

The competition simulates a law office consultation and the students are evaluated against specific criteria that emphasise the use of listening, questioning, planning, and analytical skills in a lawyer/client interview.

According to Azrizal œthe struggle is to foresee the problems that the client faced and their behaviour to enable us to gather information before giving them the legal advice.

For Naquiah and Azrizal this was their last competition as they are both final year students. However, for Najihah who is currently a third year student, she said,œThis will be my last time participating because I would love to give the opportunity to the juniors to try out as I’ll be around to help train them.

IIUM has been the representative for Malaysia for three years in a row since 2014 and managed to make it to semifinals for three years in a row too.***
