GOMBAK, 13 April 2016: An ˜Emergency Response Team (ERT) has officially been established at Mahallah Sumayyah, International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM), following a recent announcement (on 8 April) where the team will be responsible in managing the safety of its residents if an emergency occurs.
According to the Welfare and Residential Bureau of Mahallah Representative Committee (MRC), Halimatus Saadiah Husain, a programme will be arranged for residents of Mahallah Sumayyah, the MRC, and Block Representative Committee (BRC) to create awareness of an emergency plan among them.
“Thus, this programme tells us the important role of the ERT to emphasise on what need to be done during an emergency situation,” according to sources from the Mahallah.
The ERT programme began with the Director of Occupational Safety, Health, and Built Environment Department (OSHBE) IIUM, Dato Ir. Shaffei Mohamad, giving information regarding road safety and the level of safety in this university.
Meanwhile, the Selayang Fire and Rescue Department gave a briefing on how to react when faced with an emergency situation from preventing fatalities and injuries to reducing damage to the building, equipment, and others.
The ERT is led by the principal of Mahallah consisting of the assembly martial, block martial, and floor martial for every wing. They are the people responsible for announcing and guiding the residents to the assembly point and become the last persons to leave during an emergency.
The team comprises a total 72 members who are appointed by the Principal of Mahallah Sumayyah, Associate Professor Julia Mohd. Said.
A fire demonstration was held by the Selayang Fire and Rescue Department for the Mahallah residents to obtain knowledge on handling of fire extinguishers. The programme was well received by the Daya Bersih workers who participated in the fire demonstration.
The residents were also informed that there will be fire drills soon in preparation for the ERT to face a real emergency situation.***
