AN alternative to smoking cigarettes it may be, but is the e-cigarette any safer or less addictive? Claims have been made by manufacturers at the point of its introduction to the market that it can wean a smoker off cigarettes. Indeed it can, but it appears to leave the smoker no less addicted, except now, it is to a nicotine containing liquid puffed through a small device which, in sum, is just a hand-held version of the cumbersome shisha. That Malaysians are only second to the United States in the speed of taking up the habit is alarming, especially when the long-term effects are yet to be determined. And, if there was so much concern about the growing seduction of the shisha, why is the even speedier increase in vaping, as the e-cigarette smoking habit is called, not more terrifying?
