Concentrate on your driving and observe road safety

By Maryam Shikh Nasir

I am writing this to make people aware of their doings which might kill others. The thing is I observed recently many drivers of both genders texting or ‘whatsapping’ while driving. This uncontrolled action might lead to many problems.

I experienced once while driving on Jalan Ampang on the way to Saudi school to pick up my younger sister when I noticed a car in front of me going slightly to my line without any signal. I horned and saw a female driver texting. As we all know, texting needs both eyes and hand, which while driving we use them both. So, I got the idea of the danger which was about to happen because of unnecessary texting and recklessness of other human beings.

Not only this, but on another day while I was taking a taxi from IIUM to go back home in Sri Gombak, I saw a woman driver beside us on the bridge before Giant super store trying to go faster than the taxi. I was shocked of this doing because I saw her using her phone checking the messages. Alhamdulillah we did not crash.

Thirdly, one day, I and my family were going back from KLCC while my father was driving at Jalan Embassy and the road which took us to Jalan Jelatek, my sister captured a picture from her window of  an old Chinese man who was reading newspapers in his car while the traffic light was red. After a few seconds the light became green, but unfortunately he did not see it and other cars at the back were horning.

Driving is not an easy thing to do, but if a person has to do important things while driving, then there are alternatives to avoid any harm to the person or to the other road users.

My advice, especially to IIUM students, you need to be careful while driving. It is alright to stop at the side of the road rather than stand the risk of hurting or causing your life or the lives of other people. I hope this issue would be raised in the media in Malaysia so that people would be aware of  the danger.***
