The value and importance of friendship

By Nuraidah Binti Haji Abd. Hamid

The word friendship is very hard to define but we all know the value of  it. This is how we portray the friendship itself.  Friendship is where someone who you know well and care about, who also knows and cares about you. As recent years, we have been through the world with high technology as to facilitate connecting with our friends, beloved and even our family. In the positive view, it is easier for us to connect with each other even though we do not live nearby with our friends. This is to ensure we maintain the relationship.

However, ˜online  friends cannot hug us when a crisis hits, visit us when we are sick, or celebrate a happy occasion with us after study or work.

So, what is the true meaning of friendship? I am very sure many people can define it as they want it. But, for me, friendship is something valuable in my life as it leads me to see the world meaningfully. In friendship there are two things that we have to make it as principle in our relationship.

Firstly, is the value of acceptance. It is very hard to accept a friend who is not very compatible with us. But if you are looking for perfection in friendship, you will be miserable. Nobody is perfect in this world. We are human after all. We are human beings who are lacking of something in ourselves. Therefore, we have to learn to accept our friends as they are.

Secondly, is the value of giving. Giving is a very powerful weapon for those who are searching for happiness in life. As Abu Huraira reported: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said, œGive each other gifts and you will love each other.  This is to show our love to those who we appreciate. Nothing less if we give something to others.

As Allah said in the holy Quran:

œThe likeness of those who spend their wealth in the way of Allah, is as the likeness of a grain (of corn); it grows seven ears, and each ear has a hundred grains. Allah gives manifold increase to whom He wills. And Allah is All-Sufficient for His creatures needs, All-Knower. Those who spend their wealth in the cause of Allah, and do not follow up their gifts with reminders of their generosity or with injury, their reward is with their Lord. On them shall be no fear, nor shall they grieve. [al-Baqarah 2:261-262]

Believe it or not, from these two principles, it really makes sense for me to be a good person and a friend in my relationship that I call it ˜this is the TRUE friendship.

To end this article, I would like to share this quote, given by my good friend: œ We dont need someone to complete us, but we need someone who accepts us completely.***
