Time to reflect and change

By Fatin Ramli

2020 is nearly coming to an end. Even though 2020 has not yet ended, it has taught us meaningful lessons – from massive wildfire in Australia, the virus that caused the COVID-19 pandemic to the recent earthquake and flood that took place in Turkey.

The world has changed. And the world has been telling the people that the Earth needs change. If the world has changed, but why can’t we?

Let us look at ourselves. Why do we still look down at ourselves? Why do we still have doubt about ourselves? Why do we keep on questioning “what if this and that happen?” and “why can’t we believe that our wellbeing is important as well?”

The Earth has changed when it can no longer hold the toxicity inside it, should we wait a bit longer just to see how bad we can damage ourselves? Or should we make a small step in improving ourselves.

Changing ourselves does not mean that we must change drastically. We shall start with something small. Slowly but surely.  Readiness to change indicates that we are ready to improve our life, even if it is a small change, it does improve our life. There are many positive outcomes throughout the process in shifting to a new life.

Adjusting to new lifestyle helps us to develop and learn new things. Letting ourselves discover things that we never encounter before will make us realise that there are multiple ways to solve problems and every path teaches us a different lesson.

Walking through our journey may bring opportunity to open new doors. Selecting which door to step in can cause us risking our future. Stepping together with risk will make us more careful and wiser with every decision that we make. With the existence of risk, we know we have to choose either to lose or to gain, to benefit or to drawback from the expenditure we choose.

By shifting to different principle of life, we are able to challenge ourselves to step out of the comfort zone. Striding out of the comfort zone allows us to know our capability to deal and cope with strange situation. Being outside from comfort zone allows us to enhance our personal growth as by stepping out from the safe zone indicates our confidence and belief in ourselves that we can do better than what we used to do. Indirectly, we challenge ourselves so that we can perform better.

Making changes will make us realise what’s worth for us to keep and what’s worthless. From experiences throughout the changes in our journey, we will be able to see our self-values that we should keep; which principles that we want to get rid of, who should we surround ourselves with and who should we avoid. This journey will help us sort things out by the obstacles that we have experienced and the challenges we will face.

Making a change in life means living a side of the self that we never knew existed. Making changes does not mean that we must make a big difference.

A person determined to show he or she can change has become more matured and will be able to evaluate the meaning of life. Thus, we shall not be afraid to make any adjustment in our life, because changing who we are helps us to improve our personal growth. ***
