GOMBAK, 21 March 2018 - Soka Gakkai Malaysia (SGM) yesterday presented 120 books and four DVDs related to global peace and harmony to the IIUM Library.
Present at a brief presentation ceremony at the office of the President were the President, Tan Sri Dr. Rais Yatim, SGM representatives, IIUM University Management Committee (UMC) members, IIUM Library committees and a few IIUM Chinese students.
In his speech at the presentation, the President of SGM, Micheal Kok introduced the author/co-author for most of the books, Daisaku Ikeda, who was the third president of the Soka Gakkai lay Buddhist organisation in Japan and founder of Soka Gakkai International (SGI), as well as a peace builder, a Buddhist philosopher, an educator, a poet, and a prolific writer.
œToday at the age of 90 he still keeps on writing non-stop, said Kok.
Ikeda has produced more than 150 volumes of publications discussing on history, politics, peace, social issue, astronomy, science, medicine, literature, philosophy, arts, and many more, without graduating from any university.
Kok mentioned that besides publications, since 1983, Ikeda has published peace proposals to the United Nations (UN) touching on issues such as education reform, environment, human security and nuclear abolition.
œI hope these 120 books will be shared and read by IIUM members and would inspire them to have a brighter future filled with peace and harmony, he said before ending his speech.
Meanwhile, Tan Sri Dr. Rais Yatim in his speech, claimed that the university should highlight the east religions and beliefs such as Buddhism in comparative religions other than just focusing on the Abrahamic religions and beliefs such as Judaism and Christianity.
Tan Sri Rais stated, œWe have done enough Buddhism. We have not done enough Hinduism but the Chinese are here, the Indians are here in Malaysia.
œWe take this thing for granted but do we understand them? he asked.
Tan Sri Rais implied that with these 120 books, SGM had done a very big Nobel-prized type of pursuit in life.
In addition, Tan Sri Rais also announced that he will visit Soka University during the first week of April this year to find out more about the philosophy of this Japanese Buddhist religious movement. This visit would also enhance cooperation between Malaysia and Japan in terms of knowledge, learning, culture and heritage, as well as arts.
The book presentation ended with a token giving from IIUM Library to the President of SGM, Micheal Kok.
