GOMBAK, 20 September 2016: The purpose of Students’ Representative Council (SRC) is to serve the welfare of students as a whole, regardless of their nationality and Kulliyyah, covering all aspects of student life like accommodation, scholarships, facilities and financial matters, Chairman of the Election Commission, Tuan Anuzi B. Nik Him, told IIUM.fm in a special interview today.

As a requirement to be a representative, he said, a candidate seeking to be elected must have a solid and a strong academic background as well as a clean record, free from any major disciplinary actions.

“Such qualities in the student representatives would serve as a role model for other students in terms of leadership and management skills, ” he said.

IIUM campus election is one of the major events in the university’s academic calendar held annually to elect promising student representatives to the Council to serve the student community.

According to Tuan Anuzi, the SRC is not only the protector of the students but they also act as a bridge between students and the university administration to solve a certain issue.

“It can help the university to improvise services for students as well as promote the good image of the university.”

To this end, Tuan Anuzi expressed the hope that the voter turnout for this upcoming campus election will be higher than the previous year which was at 67% and 42%, for local and international students respectively.

Tuan Anuzi congratulated the last Council for their impressive performance and hoped that the newly elected Council members would continue to give their full cooperation and work together with the university’s management.

Three kulliyyahs had won uncontested in 6 of the 23 seats when nominations closed at 5.00 p.m on 19 September. The victory is in each of the two chairs in the Kulliyyah of Education, Kulliyyah of Economics and Management Sciences, and the Ahmad Ibrahim Kulliyyah of Laws.
