GOMBAK, 12 February 2015: The International Islamic University Malaysia Model United Nations (IIUM MUN) Club bagged three Diplomacy Awards at the Nanyang Technological University (NTU) MUN conference held in Singapore, which started on 6 and ended on 8 February.
Co-founder of IIUM MUN, Waheedur Rahman said, œNTU MUN conference was our first International MUN conference as a team and indeed it was a success.
The NTU MUN incorporated other MUN clubs from universities of various countries, encompassing the Indian Peninsula, Oceania, South East Asia and the Middle East.
IIUM Law student, Mohd Hafidzi Mohd Razali and two Engineering students, Waheedur Rahman and Ibrahim Redwan, founded the IIUM MUN club in late 2014. Waheed said that the purpose of IIUM MUN club is to encourage students who are passionate about real life issues to speak up and come up with ideas and resolutions.
Adding to the list of the clubs accolades, they also received awards from two MUN conferences organised by Taylors University Malaysia and Monash University Malaysia.
According to Waheedur, MUN conferences basically go the same way as the real UN conferences do, having delegates to represent different countries and councils such as the Security Council, the Human Rights Council, the General Assembly and etc., then they act out the same discussion of a real UN conference but with new creative solutions.
Mohd Hafidzi was selected to be part of the national team to represent Malaysia in the imminent WorldMUN Conference in South Korea. The other selected Malaysian students are from different universities in different countries such as Yale University, University of Adelaide and University of Warwick.
There will be two upcoming MUN conferences at the end of February and the beginning of March organised by Nottingham University Malaysia MUN and Asia Pacific University MUN respectively.
œMUN helps students in critical thinking and writing, public speaking, social skills and research skills. Our intended programmes for this semester will revolve around the issues of ISIS, capitalism and women empowerment, added Waheedur.***
