IIUM researchers win 13 awards at British Innovative Show

GOMBAK, 30 October 2014: A group of researchers from the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) has won 13 awards at the prestigious British Innovative Show 2014 that was held in the United Kingdom recently.

“We’re proud to see our researchers won these awards. This will definitely help our university to achieve the goal of becoming the leading international university of the Muslim world and to produce the best products for the benefits of the world,” said Prof. Dato’ Dr. Alias Abdullah, the Dean of Research Management Centre, IIUM.

Prof. Dr. Ahmad Faris Ismail, Dr. Salmiah Ahmad, Dr. Anis Nurashikin, Prof. Dr. Irwandi Jaswir, and Prof. Dr. Rini Akmeliawati have brought home the awards given for their creative inventions and researches mainly in the field of Engineering.

A total of ten projects were sent to the competition and one of the projects, MicroFluidics Lab-On-A-Chip by Dr. Anis Nurashikin has won the the EU Inventor Special Award. Her invention is the instantaneous cancer monitoring kit which can easily help medical practitioners and patients to monitor their own dosage of drugs.

“Only with low cost of production, this chip could screen the drugs needed by your body without extensive lab works which are tedious,” said Dr. Anis.

Meanwhile, two inventions on Electromagnetic Actuator by Prof. Dr. Ahmad Faris and the iWC: Wheelchair for Independence by Dr. Salmiah also won the Double Gold awards.

The other ten awards that were given are two Golds, four Silvers and four Bronzes.

All five researchers are from the Kulliyyah of Engineering (KOE).

The British Invention Show 2014 was held from October 22 to 25 in London, United Kingdom, and awards were given by 25 expert judges on behalf of the British Inventor’s Society to put social and ecological benefits to mankind.***
