Handle welfare with care

THERE is a need for a revamp of government officers manning counters to look into the needs of the public, especially those seeking financial assistance. The plight of this group, who are obviously poor and mainly illiterate, having to face grumpy counter officers should not be allowed to go unnoticed as they have every right to the coffers, as provided for under the law. Many bodies have been set up to assist the needy, with the Welfare Department taking the lead role and the Tithe Collection Centre (for Muslims) to help this group. There have been numerous complaints about officers making it difficult for aid recipients to get what they deserve. They may, in the end, receive the assistance but why put them through such duress with probing questions and insinuations in the first place?
