BEFORE Britains phenomenal defeat at the hands of the Japanese in 1941, poverty and political repression in Kelantan led to the formation of a commoner Persatuan Persetiaan Melayu Kelantan (PPMK), which rivalled the earlier Persatuan Melayu Kelantan (PMK), formed by the Kelantan royalty and œorang besar (dignitaries).
