N ATIONAL Day 2015, just like previous Independence Day celebrations, is a good time to turn inwards. August 31 each year offers us the prime opportunity for introspection ” for sizing up our growth as a society over the past calendar year, for examining our conscience and for recommitting ourselves to the nation that we call Malaysia. All of us need a period of peace and quiet to take stock of our lives and contributions to the countrys growth. Do we remember Malaysias founding fathers? Do we make it our business to read about their struggles in attaining independence? Do we even know who they were? What have we given to this country? The tragedies of Malaysia Airlines Flights MH370 and MH17 tested our patience and eroded our faith in all that is good. This is why we need to allow the events and trials of the past year to fall into perspective, and decide on the way forward. And, the days between the beginning of August till Aug 31 and Sept 16 ” Malaysia Day ” provide us with the occasion to reflect on the meaning of Merdeka.
