THE shooting down of Malaysia Airlines Flight MH17 was the most disastrous airline tragedy since the former USSR shot down Korean Air Line Flight 902 (KAL902), a passenger airline, near Murmansk, Soviet Union, on April 20, 1978, apparently for failure to respond to Soviet ground control and interceptors.
