NST ” An incredible 170-year journey

IN a matter of days ” on July 15, to be exact ” two days before Muslims in Malaysia celebrate the first day of Hari Raya Aidilfitri, this newspaper will be 170. This is the nations oldest surviving newspaper. When it started in Singapore, it was named The Straits Times and Singapore Journal of Commerce. It started as a weekly, and hardly 100 copies were printed each time. The words œand Singapore Journal of Commerce, however, disappeared in 1861, 16 years after its first publication.
